Description

Meatballs and gravy can be the perfect meal on a cold winter evening. And as far as comfort food goes, meatballs and gravy may be one of the best options out there. The dish is simple to make, with only five ingredients including ground beef, salt, pepper, parsley flakes, and evaporated milk or cream of mushroom soup. For more flavor you can also add a little fresh thyme or bay leaf to the mix!

Ingredients

For the Meatballs:

Canola Oil for frying – enough to cover the bottom of a large, deep skillet with ¼ – ½ inch of oil (about 1½ c)

½ tsp Garlic Powder

1 egg slightly beaten

1 lb. Ground Beef (we used ground round don’t use anything too lean; we want some fat for flavor)

¼ c Bread Crumbs plain

1 tsp salt

¼ tsp Black Pepper

½ tsp Onion Powder

For the Gravy:

2 c Beef Broth

3 tbsp Flour

3 tbsp Butter

½ c Half & Half

Instructions

For the Meatballs:

In a large mixing bowl, add garlic powder, egg, ground beef, bread crumbs, salt, pepper, and onion powder. Use your clean hands to mix everything until well blended.

Shape 20 small meatballs out of the meat mixture.

Put a large deep skillet on the stove and turn the heat to medium-high.

Add about 1 1/2 cups of oil and allow it to become hot.

Add the meatballs into the hot oil and cook for 5 minutes or until all sides turn brown.

Remove from the heat. Transfer the meatballs onto a clean plate and cover them with foil to keep them warm.

For the Gravy:

Remove the oil from the skillet, then put it back onto the stove and turn the heat to medium.

Add butter and allow it to melt.

Add the flour, then stir and cook for about a minute to remove the raw taste.

Gradually pour in the broth, then stir until well blended. Simmer for a few minutes.

Put the meatballs back to the skillet and toss until well coated by the delicious sauce. Turn the heat down to medium-low.

Cover the skillet with a lid and cook the meatballs for about 15 minutes or until done. Make sure to stir from time to time.

Add the half & half, then stir until well blended.

Turn the heat down to low, then cook the meatballs for 3 more minutes. Add more seasonings if necessary.

Serve immediately over egg noodles or mashed potatoes. Enjoy!
