Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line 2 cookie sheets with silpats or parchment or grease lightly.
In a large bowl beat butter and sugar on medium speed about 2 minutes or until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla extract until smooth. Scrape down the bowl.
In a separate bowl whisk together the flour and next 6 ingredients. Add gradually to butter mixture beating on low speed until blended.
Drop by rounded tablespoonfuls 2 inches apart. Bake 10 to 12 minutes. Cool on pan 5 minutes then remove to wire racks and cool completely.
Make the frosting:
In a small bowl whisk the sugar, vanilla maple syrup and 1 tablespoon of the whipping cream to start until smooth. Add more sugar or cream as needed.
Frost the tops of each cookie and sprinkle with walnuts.
